This year’s UplaodVR Summer Expo was an hour-long event that introduced us to many titles heading towards the best VR headsets that may soon be worthy of being called the best VR games out there.
You can also check out the full showcase to see everything that was announced, but to keep things simple, I’ve picked my seven favorites coming to Meta Quest 3 and I’m highlighting them here.
Some are out now in early access, while others will be released in 2025. There are also many genres, so let’s explore them.
Coaster Mania
Coaster Mania, which was featured at last year’s UploadVR Showcase, is back with a new trailer this year – and Roller Coaster Tycoon fans should take note.
You can design your own virtual roller coasters in mixed reality – either creating completely custom tracks within your unique environment or tackling over 50 coaster-building campaign challenges – which you can then ride in VR. Plus, you can try community-created levels to find inspiration and see what’s possible in this game.
The fall launch will come in the “Autumn” of this year (September, October, November), but is already available for early access through the App Lab on Quest.
Cursed by love
Lovesick is a story-driven VR escape room game about a post-punk band on the verge of breaking up. As bassist Sam, you must explore a surreal landscape in order to save your friends and possibly bring the band back together.
I adore VR puzzle games and Lovesick’s vibe is ticking a lot of boxes for me – especially the surreal yet art-based style it has.
It starts in 2025.
Pencil!
This mixed reality drawing app can be the perfect place for artistic beginners. Armed with a real pad and pencil, Pencil! teaches you how to draw with a mix of step-by-step tutorials and tools.
What’s particularly cool is that you can create a custom scene of virtual objects, and the app can project virtual outlines and shadow suggestions onto your page for you to follow. I’ve had fun trying out a few VR art apps, but Pencil’s focus! in beginners it can be what finally helps me get to drawing.
Best of all, Quest 3 is out now on App Lab.
Hide the corpse
Following a Kickstarter announcement a few months ago, Hide The Corpse came to the UploadVR showcase to announce a Summer Update and an early release of the game for the Quest store – plus, 20% off if you use promo code HTCSUM20-0835F9 in the week of first of the game’s early access release.
As you might guess from the name, this game is all about finding weird but clever places to store a corpse in different unique levels before time runs out, and it looks hilarious.
I’ve already downloaded this title to play on my Quest 3, and the full release of the title in Fall 2024 (September, October, November) can’t come soon enough.
Cool VR
Cold VR isn’t a sequel to Superhot – although the crystal enemies, time manipulation via movement mechanics and VR action setting might have led you to think – it’s a completely new game that I’m very excited to play when it hits Quest (although a demo is available now on Steam).
Instead of stopping time when you stand still like Superhot, time freezes when you stop moving – so you’ll need to act quickly for the best chance of survival against AI enemies and environmental challenges in your path.
Billed as an adrenaline rush for gamers who crave a challenge, Cold VR looks like a contender for the best VR action game.
Laser dancing
We’ve got another teaser for Laser Dance, a mixed reality game that projects an intricate laser maze into your living room – or whatever space you’re playing in.
We haven’t seen much of this game yet, but I think the premise is great, so I’m excited to test my laser dodging skills when it finally launches. If you agree, it’s available to wishlist in the Meta Quest Store now.
Walkabout Mini Golf: Wallace and Gromit
Last but not least, Walkabout Mini Golf teased a Wallace and Gromit inspired course coming this summer (which should be sometime in the next couple of months).
The last scene at the end hints at the kinds of wild contradictions we’ll have to face during the glory days, and I’m more than ready to take on whatever wildness awaits us at 62 West Wallaby Street.
