Here are the 20+ countries exploring support for Apple’s digital IDs in the Wallet feature – 9to5Mac

One of the most anticipated features announced at WWDC 2021 was support for storing IDs in the Apple Wallet app. Touted by Apple as the last step before you’re “completely free of your physical wallet,” the feature is still only supported by a small number of countries.

However, there are now over 20 countries working towards adopting digital IDs for citizens…

Which countries will support digital IDs?

The TSA is currently running a pilot program to accept digital IDs at some airports. Apple has said that the TSA is “working to enable” airport security checkpoints as “the first place you can use your digital ID.”

As it stands today, only four countries have launched support for digital ID through Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch: Arizona, Colorado, Maryland and Georgia. You can find more details on those states and their implementation details here.

Digital IDs are also currently in a pilot program in California, but the system does not integrate with Apple’s system. Instead, the program is managed entirely through a standalone application.

According to data compiled by the Secure Technology Alliance, more than 20 states are in the process of adopting digital mobile licenses. While this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll continue to support Apple Wallet’s implementation of the feature, it does mean they’re exploring the idea.

Here is the full list of those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • CONNECTICUT
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Wyoming

territory: Washington DC and Puerto Rico

Last update February 8, 2024: Removed Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas, which the Secure Technology Alliance says do not meet the criteria.

According to the Secure Technology Alliance, to be included on the list, a country must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Interoperable availability across all operating systems
  • Interoperable implementation in progress
  • Pilot Activities
  • Approved legislation and/or study activity
  • Implementation of non-ISO standards
  • Other mobile activities

The progress of these efforts varies from state to state. In some states, it is as basic as legislation being introduced in support of digital IDs. In other states, there has simply been “activity” related to this adoption. Additionally, delays are expected whenever Apple works on a state-by-state basis with individual governments.

Apple has said the following countries are committed to support her implementation of digital IDs in Wallet. You’ll notice that there are discrepancies between Apple’s list and the Secure Technology Alliance list, which shows how complicated this layout is.

  • CONNECTICUT
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • OHIO
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
